Saturday, February 1st, 2014 at 9:14 PM the Pageland Rescue Squad, First Health EMS, and High Point Fire District responded to a vehicle crash on Highway 207 near the state line. First arriving responders found a BMW sedan had left the road, went down an embankment, and hit a tree. EMS and Rescue personnel entered the car to care for its occupant and found that the only way to safely remove him was going to be to remove the back door, door post, and driver’s seat back. Firefighters set up a ladder on the embankment and deployed a hose line to protect rescuers should the car ignite during rescue operations. Rescuers shut down the cars electrical systems and then removed trim from the door post to check for hidden air bag inflators. The “Jaws of Life” rescue tools were then used to remove the back door and door post as well as cut and remove the driver’s seat back. The occupant was then removed from the car and transported by First Health EMS to CMC-Union with serious injuries. The crash is being investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
